One woman’s homemade comfort food recipes live on through her family at our favorite Indy chicken joint, Maxine’s Chicken & Waffles…
Talk to anyone who knew Maxine, and they’ll tell you she was a lover of people. Ask them how they knew she loved you… She fed you. From her 30 years as a cook at St. Francis Hospital to her kitchen at home, there was always a heaping of love mixed into everything Maxine cooked. Today, her family passes on her love to the masses at Maxine’s Chicken & Waffles, their Indianapolis restaurant named in her honor.
The family likes to say Maxine’s delicious recipes were the result of her never-ending experimentation in the kitchen as she cooked for her 10 children.
From Maxine’s:
Ollie (Maxine’s husband) worked at Chrysler for 33 years. Maxine cooked at St. Francis Hospital for 30 years. They worked different shifts, but through this large family and years of necessity grew a culinary magic that we now call Maxine's. This magic was fraught by years of trial and error and by putting things together that would amaze the average person. Whether it was wild game or fresh vegetables from the garden, Maxine was able to turn any dish into a tasty cuisine. During these days she had an apprentice that helped from time to time in the kitchen - this was her oldest daughter Donniece.
Judging from the chicken & waffles we ordered on our stop at Maxine’s, the experimentation paid off in mighty ways.
The restaurant’s goal of giving a “taste of love in every bite,” was certainly met in our breakfast. We only wish we’d been able to eat there 2 or 3 more times during our visit to Indianapolis to try the rest of the menu.
Locals and out-of-towners (including big-name foodies) flock to Maxine’s Chicken & Waffles for the best fried chicken, fried fish, and all kinds of other delicious foods fixed just like your grandmother would.
With a kitchen full of Maxine’s recipes and a family committed to expanding, improving, and carrying on her legacy of love through good food, we’re certain Maxine’s Chicken & Waffles will be serving up their tasty fried chicken for years to come.
